Knoxville Middle School Students Earn Awards for Their Iowa Flag Essays

Knoxville was the home to Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, creator of the Iowa Flag. On March 20, 2021 the community celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Iowa Flag.

Sixth graders at Knoxville Middle School participated in the festivities by submitting essays to a contest on the topic, “What Does the Iowa Flag Mean to Me and Why?.” Three top essays were chosen and students were able to present their essay at the celebration which was held at the Knoxville Public Library.

The top three essays were written by Addison Dunkin, Siena Scott, and Aaren Staton. The essayists were each presented with a Journal Essay book; pen; certificates to Grand Theatre and other businesses around Knoxville. All participants in the sixth grade also received a certificate.
