With great excitement I welcome all of Knoxville Community Schools’ youngest students to West Elementary! We provide exciting opportunities for students in preschool through first grade. West has a faculty committed to excellence in academic, social-emotional and behavioral learning in early childhood. Your child will be challenged with a rigorous curriculum including reading/language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, guidance, music and art. In order to participate fully in this, it will be important for your child to come to school each day ready to learn. We will invite you to become a part of your child’s learning by talking with your child each day about school and by contacting your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns.
We are so pleased to be in a beautiful new building and fully climate-controlled! Thank you so much for entrusting your children to us. With that, we have also revamped our parking and drop off/pick up areas. Please be patient with us as we find the safest and most efficient way to make this manageable!
Thank you for taking time to peruse our website. We encourage you to get involved with PTO, a dedicated group of parents and teachers who support our elementary schools in so many ways! Please let us know of any way we can assist you in making your child’s first school experiences positive thus encouraging them to take pride in their learning and accomplishments.
I look forward to meeting and working with each of you to support your child as he/she embarks upon a life-long adventure in learning!
Linda Abbott, Principal
Pick Up and Drop Off at West: Please be aware that there are new drive-through and drop off points at West Elementary. More parking spaces have been added. We request that you only use a designated parking space to park a vehicle. For the safety of everyone, we ask that you are patient with all staff/students/parents working to welcome and dismiss students.
The drive-through lane on the north side of the building is for bus traffic. The drive-through lanes on the east side of the building are for vehicles dropping off or picking up students. It is not a place to stop and park because this impedes traffic trying to move through. In the interest of everyone’s safety, please have your child get out only on the “sidewalk side” of your vehicle so that children are not crossing traffic to get to the sidewalk. It has long been a concern that parents and/or children were opening doors and stepping out in front of vehicles driving through on the left side lane. Our new parking areas and drive-through system was designed to improve everyone’s safety if it is used correctly.
We know you are excited to meet your child at the end of the day and find out all the fun things he/she did! We want to make sure that children get where they need to go at the end of the day, so please wait in the designated area for your child’s teacher to arrive there where you can meet your child. West Elementary dismisses at 3:10 p.m. Teachers are expected to take them to that location before they will be dismissed.
Supervision for before school/breakfast is not available before 7:40 a.m. Front doors are electronically set to unlock at 7:40 a.m.
Preschool students –West Elementary preschool students will enter/exit through the north doors directly into the preschool rooms. A staff member will be outside to help your child get out/in your vehicle to make the drive through system safer for your child and work more efficiently.
